The Brooze Black

By Ginkbeast

Background

When the gods responsible for the creation of the planet Quilt grew weary of their experimentation and tired of one another’s antics, a tear in the fabric of the universe opened.  Spilling out from the gash in space, an angry bruise-like, purplish-black clot of matter flooded down onto the unsuspecting Quilt.

Still barely understood, the Bruise-Black (or Brooze) is largely a mystery to the inhabitants of the Quilt.  Sometimes indiscriminate and other times selective in its victims, the Brooze can absorb the organic life it encounters, though the outcomes seem to vary from situation to situation.

A single instance of the Brooze can transition from a liquid river to a solid lump to a collective jumble of the assimilated limbs and features of its victims. A purplish-black hue still coating everything and knitting it together.  The Brooze is also capable of releasing avatars from these puddles and lumps.  These avatars appear capable of at least some autonomous behavior and sport crystalline structures growing upon their dermis or exoskeleton.

The intelligence of the Brooze and the intention of the Brooze are still yet to be determined, though so far there is evidence of a malignant desire to consume civilizations like the Starbreaker Citadel and the Crater on the planet Quilt.

The Brooze has also demonstrated a sensitivity to interacting with the Crater Critter Thunk during the first days of flooding by the Brooze within the Crater.

Readers saw their first glimpse of the Brooze Black in The Quilt #1, when the Crater Critters’ simple, pastoral existence was threatened by a strange black ooze seeping into their reality. Would their world be consumed, as so many others had before?

The Brooze Black is very mysterious. Almost everyone who has seen it was either consumed by it, or driven mad by the sight. As such, all of the descriptions of this terrible threat contradict one another, as evidenced by these terrifying drawings by eyewitnesses!

Thunk

Thunk, the living weapon, by Conner McGowan

Background

Thunk was originally a doting leader of the Crater Critters. He would often chide his fellow critters, saying “Do what you are supposed to do and it will be okay.” In a darkly ironic twist, he later became defined by two defining faults as a leader: he failed to save Xubu Xubu, and he failed at the famous fire. In a last-ditch effort to redeem himself as a leader, he managed to herd the other critters into a safe spot when the Brooze Black attacked their world. He underwent a dramatic transformation, and became a living weapon: a sentient, one-handed mace! Time will tell if destiny will offer Thunk a chance to truly redeem himself…

Creators

John Osborne was inspired by the iconic one-handed weapons in comics, such as Mjolnir, Stormbreaker, and the Boom Tube, when he originally designed Apannon Starbreaker‘s signature weapon Thunk. When the cartoonists of the Indie Comic Union got together to workshop the first Quilt story, they decided to make Thunk into a living weapon, and a character in his own right!

Y

Y reaches for a delicious goosefruit, while the more cautious Tar holds him back

Background

Y is a member of the Crater Critter tribe and a denizen of the Crater on the planet Quilt.  Task-oriented and hardworking, Y tends to keep to the sunny side and leave the sadness and dark conclusions for others to manage.  When Xubu is lost down the Great Drain, swept away by the Brooze during an expedition to harvest Goosefruits from the Far Acres, Y focuses on preparing for a further adventure to rescue their dear friend rather than believing that he is gone for good.  When the Brooze manifests inside their treehouse Y works heroically to ring the bell and warn their friends before the Brooze overtakes them and utterly demolishes the treehouse home that Y had labored all those years to keep just-so.

During the exodus from the the treehouse Thunk, Apannon, Tar & Sliver encounter a manifestation of the Brooze that has Y’s face within it calling out to them.  This is the last sighting the friends have of Y.

Xubu

Background

Xubu is a member of the Crater Critter tribe and a denizen of the Crater on the planet Quilt.  Carefree and competent in the face of fear, Xubu is helpful to his friends and full of bravado when others around him would wilt.  Compared to Thunk, Xubu is a much more lighthearted and optimistic heroic figure. While out harvesting the mythic Goosefruits from the Far Acres of the Crater, X is swept away at the first appearance of the Brooze and carried downstream to the Great Drain:  a deep and watery series of underground canals at the basin bottom of the Crater.  Despite his friends efforts Xubu has yet to found either dead or alive.

Crater Critters

The Crater Critters by Conner McGowan

Background

There is a mysterious caldera buried deep within the barren wastelands of Planet Quilt. A true oasis in an otherwise hostile world, The Crater is a small lush hideaway, populated by… The Crater Critters! These cute little creatures have not been exposed to the same hardships as others in their world.

Sliver, Xubu, Y and others are led by the hardheaded Thunk. When the Brooze Black comes to threaten their semi-idyllic, Ewok-like existence, they must learn to contend with a harsher world than they were ever prepared for!

Kevin Curley’s rendition of Xubu, one of the main Crater Critters

Creators

While John Osborne was working on design work for Apannon, Bradley Littlejohn decided to work out the designs for Sliver and Tar. Within thirty minutes, the characters were established, and they began to take on a life of their own!

During the group drawing video for the Crater Critters, it was suggested that the world could be rendered in a Dr. Seuss-like, whimsical style! (Watch the video here: The Quilt Comic Episode 4: Crater Critters ) One of our main goals with this project was to offer a showcase to a wide variety of artistic styles, so John and Bradley wrote the script with this goal very much in mind.

Apannon

Apannon design by John Osborne
Apannon last Lord of the Starbreakers by John Osborne

Background

Apannon, last of the Starbreakers, is a leader of a once knightly and now increasingly barbaric tribe that has been stranded along with the remnants of their spacefaring vessel on the Quilt. Once a proud starfaring culture Apannon has struggled to hold her people true to their noble ways in the face of adversity and conflict with nearby Patches on Quilt. The ancient gods and primal forces at war over the fate of Quilt seem to have plans for Apannon, although what that entails has yet to be discovered.

Creators

Apannon was among the first characters designed for the Quilt comic. John Osborne‘s initial design work created a proud warrior leader struggling to prop up a culture laid-low by the hardships of life on the Quilt.

Apannon’s mace, Thunk, was animated and turned into a character with a destiny of their own through the initial workshopping and conversations that went into preparing the Quilt project for the Indie Comic Union.
